I’m Chris Brennan. I created Spirit of 1776 to make American history easier to explore and a little more fun to share. The stories follow the sources. The shop is where the chibi characters and history jokes get to loosen their collars.

Spirit of 1776 is a small independent project: ten illustrated stories, a timeline, a quiz, and a growing collection of made-to-order goods. I link the sources so you can check the history for yourself.
How I handle the history
- Start with primary sources and public institutions whenever possible.
- Separate documented facts from tradition, interpretation, and uncertainty.
- Say when an illustration combines people or moments instead of recreating one documented scene.
- Link directly to the evidence so you can keep reading.
- Correct substantive errors openly and promptly.
How the artwork is made
The illustrations are developed with digital and AI-assisted tools, then reviewed, edited, typeset, and prepared for print by Spirit of 1776. Historical scenes are interpretive, and sources are linked with each story.
